Town Halls are intended for our regular attendees (~3+ sessions qualifies in my book) and are different from the twice-monthly topic discussion meetings. Town Halls exist to facilitate communication and collaboration around group logistics and governance.

For those that choose to attend, please note that the meeting will be recorded for my private, personal record keeping so that I have a summary of the discussions and decisions. To protect the integrity of voting on Proposals and to prevent unknown individuals from attending, we ask that attendees use their first name and last initial and be identifiable via camera or an audio check-in.

Agenda

The general overview for our Town Hall Meetings will be to discuss/examine/explore:

  • Present any Proposals submitted by attendees for consideration and a potential vote
  • What’s working/not working well and how we can improve it
  • Open up the floor for feedback/questions from other community members
  • Longer-term plans and ambitions
  • Review current donations total and discuss how resources can be allocated

Town Hall #7 (2026-10-29)

  • Review Year-to-Date donations for 2026 and discuss how excess resources will be allocated
  • Discuss the logistics of creating an additional meeting time (3 hours earlier than the current one) that will also be used to create anonymized topic discussion summaries

Martha’s Rules

For our Town Hall meetings, we’re (attempting to…/experimenting with…) implementing Martha’s Rules.

Martha’s Rules is a simple parliamentary procedure which originated in the 1970s at a housing cooperative in Madison, Wisconsin.

Generally the process is:

  • Proposals are drafted before the meeting in a standard format, distributed to participants and read before the meeting.
  • Proponents introduce the proposal.
  • A sense of the group is taken with thumbs up as “like”, thumbs down representing “uncomfortable”, and thumbs to the side representing “could live with”.
  • The sense determines whether a formal vote happens immediately (mostly likes), the proposal is sent back to be reworked (uncomfortable), or if it’s discussed for 10 minutes (some uncomfortable).
  • The majority can decide to overrule the objections of the minority.
